Blanes – an old fishermen’s town

Blanes is a resort town that is located in the Girona province of Catalonia, Spain. It is a beautiful seaside resort within the Costa Brava region. A well-known vacation spot, there are many tourists that visit during the summer months to take in the sunshine, warmth and ocean breezes.

The town of Blanes is the most southern holiday resort area in Costa Brava. It is a very popular destination for Spaniards as well as international visitors.

It prides itself on a beach that is three kilometre (two mile) long, with sandy bays and rocky coves. The main beach area is backed by high-rise hotels and apartment blocks.

Blanes is one of the quieter vacation spots in Costa Brava. The resort caters more towards families and older couples who seek to enjoy the sea, sun, and sand.

The Climate

The summer-time is the most enjoyable time to be in Blanes with hot temperatures and sunshine that is not overly uncomfortable. July and August can reach highs of 31 degrees Celsius.

The winter months are usually cool and wet due to the northern location of the town. It has been known to reach highs of 16 degrees Celsius during these months – excluding January, which is typically the coldest month of the year.

The damp winters lend to producing green and fertile land for the warmer months. Take pleasure in the lush, green agriculture throughout the remaining months of the year.

The Attractions

Inside the town itself, visitors are able to go to see the thirteenth century St Joan medieval castle, ancient churches and buildings, two botanical gardens, traditional street markets, and fiestas and folk dancing fairs.

The Cuisine

There are more than 150 restaurants that cater to tourists and vacationers, but if you would like to experience the local cuisine without the touristy flare, you should visit the smaller establishments that can be found behind the promenade.

Fresh seafood and local Catalan dishes are two of the specialties in Blanes.

The Things to Do

Blanes is not known for an abundance of night-life, although you will be able to find a few British themed pubs and bars. For those looking for night-life, they will be able to find it in the nearby town of Lloret de Mar.

For some family fun, there is Waterworld that is located near Lloret de Mar, and Marineland which is south of Barcelona.

Santa Cristina

Santa Cristina is build close to the Mediterranian Sea. On the northern part of Blanes, with it’s own beaches. The urbanisation is well maintained, with lots of green. Tenniscourts, a restaurant and a supermarket can be found close by.
